This week's MOTUM newsletter highlights the growing global demand for electric bikes, the construction of a new gigafactory in Valencia and a new European plan to improve public transportation accessibility for the elderly.

🚲 2023 is going to be the year of the electric bicycle in Germany

If Germany was a thermometer for taking the temperature of electric bicycles sales then we would see that there is a fever soaring in Europe. The popularity of e-bikes in this Central European country is on the rise and could overtake conventional bicycles sales for the first time in 2023, according to the cycling industry associations ZIV and VDZ.

In 2022, almost half of all bicycles sold in the country (48%) were electric, as revealed in the market figures presented by these associations. ZIV head Burkhard Stork expects that more e-bikes will be sold than non-motorised bicycles this year. E-bikes already hold a dominant share of around 90% in the mountain and cargo bike sectors.
