Just a few months ago, most forecasts for the European automotive market pointed in the same direction: 2025 would be the year Tesla cemented its leadership in Europe, while BYD would emerge as a strong contender, steadily closing the gap with Elon Musk’s firm. The launch of the revamped Model Y was expected to drive a record-breaking year for the American automaker. At the same time, BYD had circled this year on the calendar as its moment to break into the European market and establish itself among the region’s top-selling brands. A third of the way into the year, only one of those predictions has come true. BYD has just reached a historic milestone: for the first time, it has surpassed Tesla in European sales.
